gdc.. and postcards

I went to GDC the week before last as my graduation present, it was great! (Thanks parents! :D )

I have lots of photos and sketches from this, but do not have time to post. Perhaps next week.

In other news..

Hey, remember those postcards? COOL. Me too.

They exist in tangible form now!!

However, this means that gallery dropoff is imminent. Agh!

thesis postcard process

Our school does advertisement postcards for our thesis shows, so I needed to create an image for mine..

Here was the initial lineart. I wanted my main character on the postcard, but instead of showing a straightforward action shot from the book, I decided to allude to the color scheme instead and go for sort of an old advertisement illustration feel.

Threw together a few color schemes for my own reference and for the critique we were having at the time. Ended up combining the darker tones of one and three with the vibrancy of the orange in two.

Some rough paintover, since I only had an hour or two to complete this..

And here’s what I ended up using for my final card, albeit a little more cropped than the actual image is.

I regret that I didn’t have more time to bring it to completion. Perhaps I’ll do that on my own time this week.

puckett

In between painting my thesis, I’ve been working on Emily Bozek’s honors directing thesis (“Puckett”) as character design lead…

.. and it’s a WHOLE lot of work for such a short trailer! But it’s fun, nonetheless.

Here’s some designs for the Prince character, prior to any cleanup.

I’ll see about posting some of the other characters, height references, and the varying stages of production cleanup as I finish them. A bit too busy right now though.

daily me

I used to do these as warmups a lot prior to drawing.. Decided to do one today before settling down to work. Look, it’s me!

cinematic

These aren’t ~technically new, but I haven’t posted them here yet..

Some roughs from my independent project.

inspiration wall process

This is pretty old (I think you can tell from what I’m wearing that it was about 50 degrees out) but I thought you guys might want to see the process of putting up my work & inspirations for my graduation project.

I’m on the phone for a fair amount of it, you might notice– that’s because my fellow Outreskirr collaborator, Mckenzie got lost in the middle of nowhere on the way to a studio get-together, and I didn’t want her to die. Hahah!

side by side

Over the holidays, I’ve been redoing some old stuff I did back in January through March. Most of it was okay conceptually but wasn’t done well for a lot of reasons (too busy, unskilled at drawing subject, sick), so I’m bringing it up to par.

These two still need a lot of work, but as you can see from a side by side comparison, they’re already much better.

Might try to post more screenshots of work tomorrow, I’ve got a ton that I keep forgetting to put up on here.

imitosis

is not a real word, but is the name of a very good Andrew Bird song, which I recommend.

Here are some roughs and partially done stuff from lately, with so much more to come once I scan my sketchbook tonight.

Oldest sketch I have of my thesis main character, from last year..

Sketchpage from a few months ago, colored with new brushes.

Brush tests 1: room of people in Katie Rubin’s figure drawing class, 5mins.

Brush tests 2: quick sketch of self working in the studio, ~15mins.

Brush tests 3, an apple.

Same apple, different brush. This one’s a little wonky proportioned.

Yet another apple.

My coffee, while at home.

I do not remember why I drew this, actually.

Stay tuned for more..

some ip photos

Aka, “senior independent project”, aka “my life for the past three weeks and next 5 months.”

First day, when I was assigned it. Kind of depressing and grey.

Fresh paint job. Much better.

This chair was the only thing I had in my studio for about a week– still using it to hold my coat and bag because I haven’t got around to putting up a coathook.

Rough draft.

A shelf appears!

The graduate library has very low ceilings. Going to retrieve reference books for my work.

Working in the afternoon..

Level mapping.

Came in to work on a rainy friday. I keep my extra hat on my anatomy reference skull.

Usual edible contents of desk.

Plant and mind map.

Half asleep reading the worst possible translation of Faust that exists.

Latest doodle on the IP board. Kind of sloppy and anatomy’s off, though– might redo it if they don’t clean the board this week.

And that’s all for now.

I have some painting studies to post as well, plus tons and tons of project sketches, but those aren’t resized yet.
